at my place, the flicker comes around infrequently to feed...not sure why....up until last month, I hadn't seen him in more than 6 months

Yes it does look like a flicker...never had one of those in our yard as far as I know!

I agree with aqroshong....It is a flicker. I see them in my yard occasionally. I think they are in the woodpecker family.
